THE PLAIN - GROSSMATT

The middle peak, called "Grossmatt", is a high plain with only grass, a huge place between the trees of the forests. There *was* only one tree, the famous landmark of this plain. It was a very old special sort of a rowan tree (sorbus aria) which grows only in the higher Vosges mountains. People use the berries for making a white alcohol, which is high recommended as "Alisier" in the Vosges mountains and which is considered as a nearly magic ethnic remedy. In ancient times the wise women in France had normal rowan trees or these ones with the big berries in front of their houses. Late middle age legends perverted this tree as a protection against witches.

The tree on the Grossmatt was a very special one, growing on nine trunks in spirals. It was venerated by traditional people, by folklore, by pagans. It was in very good health. Suddenly it was cut down. Nobody knows why. There was no reason like illness or building something there. It was just cut down and most of the people, who knew that tree, are very sad now
